Puzzle Collages by Gerhard Mayer

Speaking of jigsaw puzzles as art, Nürnberg-based artist Gerhard Mayer creates large-scale collages by using jigsaw puzzle pieces from different boxes. How large-scale? The one pictured above is nearly 7 feet tall and 18 feet wide, making it actually bigger than the world's current largest puzzle with 33,600 pieces.

Not only that, the pieces are layered in various sections to create a 3-D effect, which gives it the look and feel of an oil painting from far away. Incredibly time-consuming for sure.

See more images (including the one above) at Colossal, or head directly to Mayer's portfolio.
